Simon J. Mayer, skier, teacher, home restorer and outdoorsman

Simon J. Mayer died on December 10, 2019 at the age of 78 in New London, NH.  Simon was born and raised in Maria Alm, Austria and was the youngest of 10 children of Sebastian and Katharina Mayer. Simon attended schools in Austria including training at the Berufsschule in Salzburg. On becoming a Kirchenrestaurator (Church restorer), Simon worked in many old Catholic churches in Germany and Austria cleaning and refreshing frescos and specializing in gold leaf restoration. Simon also became a ski instructor in Austria which led to his coming to America in 1962 to work for Dartmouth College at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, NH. Simon served there as Ski School Director for 43 years. In the off season, he ran a painting and carpentry business in Hanover retiring in 2006. He was more than just an exceptional skier and teacher. Simon's many talents included restoration of homes, gardening, photography, wood carving and wood bowl turning, watercolor and oil painting. Through his own initiative, Simon taught himself computer skills to include making his own personalized cards, videos, slideshows, CDs and DVDs. He was most happy being outdoors and keeping active, which he did for as long as he could.

Simon is survived by his daughter Astrid and her three children, his brothers Balthasar, Alexander and Alois, his sister Susanne, numerous nieces and nephews, his long time partner of 37 years - Cindy plus many colleagues and friends made along the way.
