Arthur Joseph Merchant, made friends everywhere he went

Arthur was born in Burlington on December 4, 1935 to Alfred and Gladys (Abair) Merchand.

Arthur graduated from Burlington High School in 1955. He was an active member of the Class Reunion Committee to which he took great pleasure in helping to plan and attend many reunion gatherings. He met his future bride, Virginia Bushey when they worked together at the Burlington Daily News; they were married on September 10, 1955. They were married for 53 years until Virginia's passing in August, 2009.

Arthur had an uncanny memory for faces and names. Anywhere he traveled, it was rare that he did not see a familiar face to talk with, even thousands of miles from home.  Arthur worked as a route salesman for the Burlington Daily News, Table Talk Pies, Fassetts Bakery, Koffee Kup Bakery, Ben's Sandwiches and Green Mountain Florist Supply. He was a long-standing member of the Burlington Elks Club 916 and St. John Vianney Church.

Heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Gilwee, for years of caring, compassion and support. Arthur’s family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and caretakers over the last months: UVM Medical Center, Burlington Health and Rehab, UVM Home Health & Hospice Care and Gazebo Senior Living.

A private family burial will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of A. W. Rich Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Arthur’s memory may be made to UVM Health & Hospice
