State police probe death of incarcerated person at Springfield prison

Ronald Roy, 71, of Errol, New Hampshire, is the sixth incarcerated person who has died in the state’s prison system this year.


Man arrested in Vermont in connection with Jan. 6 Capitol riot

Brian Preller, who is not from Vermont, was arrested in Hardwick in relation to his alleged participation in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. He appeared later in the day in federal court in Rutland where was released on conditions, including that he not possess any firearms.

Stacey Vaillancourt pleaded not guilty in March 2019 to charges of manslaughter and child cruelty in the death of 6-month-old Harper Rose Briar. Jury selection in the case is set for next month, with a trial to follow.


Brattleboro man claims he killed an attacker in self-defense; police probing origin of gun

Nicholas Baker, 34, is facing charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. He has not been charged with killing the man he claims attacked him Friday night.

Michael Goldberg, the court-appointed receiver overseeing the Northeast Kingdom ski resort, did not disclose the identity of the new bidder, though one Jay Peak official noted a “pretty sharp increase” in interest since news of an initial $58 million bid was reported earlier this month.

Zachary Paul, 21, joined the Ludlow Police Department in July after graduating from the Vermont Police Academy. On Monday night he was taking part in field training when he shot 35-year-old Michael Mills following a police chase, according to Vermont State Police.

A member of the Ludlow Police Department shot the 35-year-old man around 9:30 p.m. Monday on South Hill Road in Ludlow, according to Vermont State Police.
