Vermont lawmakers celebrate as Biden moves to forgive up to $20,000 for student loan borrowers

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 77,000 Vermonters carry federal student loan debt, and the average loan balance is $37,000. President Joe Biden’s plan would forgive up to $10,000 for individuals earning less than $125,000 a year, and twice that for Pell Grant recipients.

Perennial candidate H. Brooke Paige has rescinded his Republican nominations for all of his statewide campaigns but one: secretary of state. The Vermont Republican Party has until Friday to nominate replacement candidates for attorney general, auditor and treasurer.


Vermonters ‘cured’ majority of defective ballots in primary voting, resulting in low rejection rate

By the time votes in last week’s historic primary were tabulated, only a quarter of a percent of ballots were rejected. By comparison, 3.5% of primary ballots were deemed defective in 2020, with no way to fix them.
