Since 1961, Vermont has sent 1,629 volunteers, including 46 who were evacuated in 2020, to serve in the name of peace around the world with the Peace Corps.
In my living room, over 50 years later, through the translation of his college daughter, I listened to her father’s gratitude for our efforts so long ago to help save his people from the scourge of smallpox.
The film “Once in Afghanistan” premiered in 2008 at Castleton University. We donated all money raised, over five years, from screenings and sales of the movie on DVD to nongovernmental agencies working in Afghanistan.
We became acquainted with bright, ambitious, open, friendly people caught between two worlds — the isolated, rural, medieval world of traditional Afghanistan and the beckoning opportunities of the modern world.
The Peace Corps’ first director said the organization had been built upon the ideals of Camp William James. Over the last 60 years, the Peace Corps has sent volunteers to 140 countries to help local communities address health, hunger, environmental and educational challenges.
